SIA “Centrālā Laboratorija” supports new mothers of large families

For several years now, SIA “Centrālā Laboratorija” has maintained a close partnership and friendship with the Association of Large Families, providing free vitamin D tests to new mothers of large families. Vouchers for the free test are given to mothers of a third child in all 17 hospitals across Latvia that have a maternity ward.

The programme initiated by SIA “Centrālā laboratorija” also includes support for seniors, from whom the laboratory purchases custom-made knitted garments for newborns.

Since the project began in 2022, more than 5,050 women across Latvia have had the opportunity to have their blood vitamin D levels tested free of charge.

For mothers of large families, monitoring vitamin D levels is especially important, as they are at greater risk of developing a deficiency in this essential nutrient. Each pregnancy places strain on the body and increases the demand for nutrients. This is particularly critical during breastfeeding, as the mother’s vitamin D level directly affects the baby’s health.

Knowing their vitamin D status allows each mother to receive a personalised vitamin dosage, helping to prevent health issues related to deficiency, such as weakened immunity or fragile bones, and to reduce the risk of postnatal depression.
