Continuing efforts to foster interest among young people in careers in healthcare – while strengthening and highlighting the value of professions involved in the sector – the career education programme “Ēnu diena” (“Shadow Day”) was held on 1 April 2026 across several AB City group healthcare companies. By gaining first-hand insight into the daily work of pharmacists, laboratory specialists, physicians, and other professionals, pupils were able to make more informed decisions regarding their future education and career paths.
At "Mēness aptieka", pupils had the opportunity to observe the daily responsibilities of pharmacists, gain an understanding of the pharmacies operations, and receive answers to their questions.
At "Centrālā laboratorija", participants were introduced to the profession of laboratory specialists and laboratory operations, learned about the latest technologies in medical testing, and gained insight into the critical role of laboratory diagnostics within the healthcare system.
Meanwhile, at the "Veselības centru apvienība" “Klīnika EGV,” pupils met with the clinic’s Head, Marta Slaidiņa, learned more about the clinic’s operations and structure, visited the embryology laboratory, and were introduced to the professions of embryologist and reproductive specialist. Pupils also visited "AIWA Clinic", where they toured the operating facilities, observed demonstrations of various medical technologies by specialists, and discussed topics of interest.
Pupils also visited Latvian pharmaceutical manufacturer "Olpha", where they toured the Research and Development Centre and learned about the processes involved in clinical trials and observational studies of medicinal products.
“Shadow Day” is a globally recognised career education programme by Junior Achievement for pupils in grades 1–12. During the programme, pupils visit a workplace and spend 4 to 6 hours observing the daily work of a professional in their field of interest.
