“Mission of Kindness” is a new charity initiative by “Mēness aptieka”, which was launched in September 2025. The programme aims to support children with special needs and to raise public awareness about important health and social inclusion issues they face.
In cooperation with the Latvian Children’s Fund, the programme will support families raising children with special needs by helping them obtain assistive technologies in cases where state funding is insufficient to cover assistive devices tailored to their needs.
“Every child has the right to a fulfilling life and equal opportunities for development, regardless of their health condition. Mobility is a crucial precondition for the inclusion of children with special needs in society – it enables them to attend school, meet friends, and participate in daily life. While the state already provides significant support, together with contributions from society and businesses we can achieve even more. An initiative such as “Mission of Kindness” is a strong example of how compassion combined with action can broaden the opportunities available to children and their families,” says Reinis Uzulnieks, Minister of Welfare of Latvia.
“We recognize that, together with our partners and the wider community, we can accomplish a lot – even build a bridge to help overcome life’s challenges. The Latvian state provides important support for children with special needs, yet in everyday life families often require more than the state alone can offer. With our “Mission of Kindness”, everyone now has the chance to get involved – whether by choosing products marked with the “Mission of Kindness” label at “Mēness aptieka” or by making a donation. To ensure a strong and stable foundation for this initiative, “Mēness aptieka” is donating €10,000 to the Latvian Children’s Fund. By supporting individual children and families, we can collectively help kindness flow through society – from heart to heart. We believe this will be a lasting value for Latvia,” says Vilma Fairclough, Chairwoman of the Board of “Mēness aptieka”.
Families raising children with special needs often face mobility barriers, which is why “Mēness aptieka” has launched this initiative to provide a practical solution to promote children’s mobility. For example, the programme co-finances the design and production of car seats adapted to children's needs, giving them greater opportunities to participate in daily activities, attend school, play, and spend time with their families outside the home.
A large-scale 3D urban artwork in Āgenskalns Square has been created to mark the launch of the “Mission of Kindness”. The artwork aims to encourage society to pay attention to the mobility of children with special needs and to invite people to get involved and offer support. It symbolically invites people to think about the obstacles that children with special needs face every day. At the center of the artwork is a bridge that crosses a deep ravine, visually representing a transition to a wider world and reminding us that opportunities can be achieved with the support and participation of society.
At the launch of the programme, “Mēness aptieka” donated €10,000 to the Latvian Children's Fund to support the first families. From now on, when buying products with the "Mission of Kindness" label at “Mēness aptieka”, 10 euro cents from each purchase will go towards supporting children. Donation boxes have also been placed in several pharmacies.
The “Mission of Kindness” is a long-term charity programme that will help improve the situation in the field of health and social support, where the state's resources are not always sufficient to cover the needs.
