Pharmacists observe heart surgery at the Latvian Centre of Cardiology

07 June 2024

In order to better understand the treatment processes of patients with cardiovascular diseases while providing much needed pharmaceutical care, pharmacists from “Mēness aptieka” met with specialists from the Latvian Centre of Cardiology at Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital and observed modern cardiovascular surgeries in person as part of a Continuing Education Day.

The pharmacists listened to a lecture by Professor Andrejs Ērglis on the achievements and challenges of Latvian physicians and researchers in modern cardiology and learned about the work of invasive cardiologists and nurses during surgeries at the Invasive Cardiology Laboratory of the Latvian Centre of Cardiology.

“Lifestyle, environment, well-being and other factors are crucial for health, happiness and life expectancy of people in Latvia. But when a person sees the doctor, the conversation and, above all, the understanding between the patient, the doctor and the pharmacist is particularly important. That is why I very much appreciate the interest of pharmacists in looking into the processes that happen to people before they go to the pharmacy for their medicines”, says Professor Andrejs Ērglis, Head of the Latvian Centre of Cardiology.

“Patients that come to our pharmacy after invasive cardiology procedures and heart surgery are part of our daily work. When patients or their relatives come to the pharmacist with their prescriptions, it is very important for us to provide the best pharmaceutical care. Meeting the doctors, learning about their daily work and the latest trends in patient treatment helps us to develop a deeper understanding of how to support patients on their way to recovery. I am glad that this day has made our pharmacists even more passionate about preventive work keeping in mind the heart health of the Latvian population”, said Jeļena Petrišina, pharmacist and Board Member of “Mēness aptieka”, who was pleased with the meeting dedicated to continuing education.
