In January this year, the Latvian pharmaceutical manufacturer Olpha AS has successfully renewed its ISO 14001:2015 certification for its environmental management system, which is complemented by a continuous energy consumption assessment process. The certification was renewed following an audit by the international auditing company Bureau Veritas and is valid for three years. This document certifies that the environmental management system of Olpha AS meets the highest international standards.
The renewed certificate demonstrates the company's commitment to environmental principles and to improving its operations to reduce its environmental impact. In addition, the ISO 14001:2015 certificate promotes the competitiveness of the Latvian company, facilitates access to international markets, and helps build trust with partners and customers who demand the highest environmental standards in their supply chains.
As part of the re-certification process, last year Olpha AS organised comprehensive training for all of its employees, paying particular attention to the specific work of each department. This training has ensured that all employees are well informed about the requirements of the environmental management system and energy efficiency and the measures to be taken to comply with them.
The audit assessed the environmental management system and energy efficiency of Olpha AS, covering the production of basic materials and preparations as well as other chemicals, both inorganic and organic. A number of environmental initiatives were also assessed, such as water extraction, treatment and supply processes, wastewater collection and treatment, and raw material and product storage and warehousing. Certification has also been carried out in accordance with Cabinet of Ministers Regulation No. 487 of 26 July 2016 “Regulations on Energy Audit of Enterprises”. In addition, the production of electricity from renewable resources was also assessed, as the company has a fully operational solar panel park with a capacity of 3.2 megawatts (MW) since October 2024. The total investment in the solar park project amounts to €3.56 million.
“The renewal of this certificate is a testament to our commitment not only to producing high quality medicines, but also to working responsibly and in an environmentally sustainable manner,” says Sandra Krivmane, Deputy Director of Olpha's Technical Department, who was responsible for obtaining the ISO certification: “We are committed to further improving our environmental management system to ensure efficient use of energy and reduce the environmental impact of our operations.”
The renewal of the certificate further establishes Olpha as a leading pharmaceutical company in the Baltics that not only develops medicines, but also actively invests in environmental sustainability and efficient resource management. In 2024, Olpha received the prestigious platinum rating for the first time in the annual Sustainability Index assessment.
