Pharmacists from “Mēness aptieka” visited the surgical clinic “AIWA Clinic” to gain a deeper understanding of the therapeutic processes involved in the care of patients after knee and hip replacement surgery, with a particular focus on the care of patients with diabetes. During the meeting with traumatologist, orthopaedist Visams Rafaels, the pharmacists watched a surgical demonstration video, visited the clinic`s surgical unit and discussed the latest developments in joint diseases.
During the pharmacists`s training day, traumatologist and orthopaedic surgeon Visams Rafaels, Head of the Orthopaedic Centre at “AIWA Clinic”, introduced pharmacists to the most common knee and hip joint diseases, injuries, patient complaints, diagnostic and surgical treatment options, post-operative care and pain management.
“It is important that our patients receive multidisciplinary care to ensure quality of life after injury and in the post-operative period. Pharmacists, in addition to physicians, are an essential part of this care process. Therefore, knowledge sharing and collaboration between healthcare professionals should be promoted. This will ensure that patients receive the care and support they need during their recovery,” says Visams Rafaels.
Irina Korčagina, pharmacist at “Mēness aptieka” and her colleagues appreciate the experience: “By improving our knowledge, we can help patients more effectively - giving advice on medication use, pain relief options and promoting recovery. Working with doctors, especially when it comes to patients who are overweight or patients with diabetes, allows us to better understand treatment processes and patient needs.”
Continuing education days for pharmacists are organised to strengthen the knowledge and practical experience of pharmacists in the care of the public`s health and the continuous improvement of pharmaceutical care. Close cooperation with other health professionals is particularly important for prevention and health promotion.
